A Spira project

Rota do Fresco is the 1st Cultural Touring route of Portugal, launched in 1998. It is the result of a strategic partnership between several living forces and institutions somehow related to the management of cultural heritage or the administration of the territory of the 15 municipalities of Alentejo that compose the Route.

Assuming itself as Heritage Based Local Development Project, Rota do Fresco focuses on Alentejo’s unknown treasure – the fresco mural painting that is kept, for very specific reasons and directly related to the development of this region over the past 500 years, in almost every religious building in the territory.

In addition to creating a unique opportunity to go through the usually closed doors of more than 50 monuments part of the Route, through the availability of cultural tourism itineraries, Rota do Fresco also promotes a work of heritage awareness of the communities involved, as well as the promotion and support of conservation and restoration interventions in the examples that integrate the Project.
